What to Do for Mom Around the House on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day 2015 does not have to cost a lot to make it a day for mom to remember. Check out the ideas below and the video for a few things Mom would appreciate you doing for her. She still want the card too. But give her some of your time and energy she deserve it.

Mother’s Day 2015 is May 10! Consider these ways to show appreciation for your mother and make her day extra special

About the Author
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I’ll describe as “collected.” I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I’ve been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

My mom still laughs about that Mother’s Day in the mid-1970s, where the whole family spent the day scrubbing out the above ground pool. It was memorable, if less than ideal. But there are a lot of better ways to spend special time at home with Mom.

After talking with a bunch of mothers about what they’d like for Mother’s Day, on May 10 this year, I found some common threads. They all dream of getting a break from their everyday responsibilities, they don’t really want their kids spending money on them, and they want to spend time with their families at home. Also worth noting is that none were fans of breakfasting in bed. Here are some suggestions for helping Mom feel special on her day.

Make this the one day Mom doesn’t have to say, “Clean your room!” Make your bed nicely. Get everything put away and picked up. While you’re at it, change Mom’s sheets. Going to bed knowing there are clean sheets on the bed and not having to put them on yourself is always a special treat.
Plant a window box together. Hit the nursery and have the plants ready to present to Mom, then enjoy getting your hands dirty together. If you don’t have a window box or if making one is too much work, create a small container garden with potted plants.

Activity of Imbolc 2015
Activity of Imbolc 2015 — Honor and Celebrate the abundance of earth
The plough is an integral part of the Imbolc sabbat.  Imbolc represents the very beginning of spring. This is the festival of the Maiden, marking her reawakening and renewal.  Imbolc marked the earliest agricultural activity of the season:  breaking the ground in preparation to plant new crops, blessing of the seeds and consecration of agricultural tools.    Imbolc would mark the first day of ploughing.  A decorated plough was dragged from door to door, with costumed children following asking for food, drinks, or money.   Depending on the tradition of the area, plows might be decorated with flowers and greenery then drenched with whiskey, signifying the “water of life” or ewe’s milk, which is the sacred liquid of Imbolc and the sabbat’s patron, the Goddess Brigid, Diety of fire and fertility.  Pieces of cheese and bread would be left by the plow and in the newly turned furrows as offerings to the nature spirits.  It is considered taboo to cut or pick plants during this time.
Imbolc is a time to honor and celebrate the abundance of the earth.  In modern times, you can still participate in this millennia old tradition by having an agricultural ceremony of your own.  If you have your own garden, you can decorate your rake, hoe or garden spade.  If you live in an apartment or don’t have a garden, you can fill a terra-cotta pot with soil and lay out the seed packets.  With focus and intention, see your seeds growing in healthy lush plants.  A green or brown candle make a nice addition, signifying the earth’s growth and abundance.  This ceremony can be as simple or complex as you choose.  The intent of this sabbat is to reconnect with the earth and it’s life giving qualities.  Even if you buy your food at the supermarket, putting your conscious awareness into one small pot to grow on your windowsill will connect you to this eternal life giving energy that is celebrated at Imbolc.

Weekly Tarot Reading from Divine Love Readings by Leah

Leah’s Weekly Tarot Reading January 19-25, 2015. This is a general reading based on the current energies of the week.

The week begins with a need for renewal, recuperation, and a recharging of your batteries. This is a time to regroup, to recover from a recent stressor that has taken place in your life. You are in need a period of calm to rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit. Quiet your mind. Meditation would serve you very well. Like the woman in the card, be still. Slow your breath, slow your heart rate. Recover.

In the middle of the week, a departure or absence is indicated. Something or someone you had hoped to see is nowhere to be found. You are looking out, awaiting, but you are met with nothing. This could bring up a variety of emotions for you, such as melancholy, grief, or resentment.

Toward the end of the week and into the weekend, mental anguish and sleepless nights could be plaguing you. The woman in this card is up at night, unable to sleep, and holding her head. The source of your problem is likely your head (mind), and your anxieties and fears could reach the point where they are causing physical discomfort for you. During such a time, energy clearing would provide relief. You can run divine love through your body empowered to clear you of any negative energy, thoughts, thought forms, emotions, etc. that do not belong to your soul. Slow, deep breaths and making the conscious choice to be in the present moment (rather than the past or future) would also be beneficial.

The first theme of the week is rest, peace, and comfort. If you can quiet the mind and allow your soul to lead, you could experience a restful, peaceful week. I believe this card is an indication of what is available to you, should you choose it for yourself.

The second theme of the week is the Tower Reversed. Again, this can have either a positive or negative aspect, and which one would apply to you depends on your perspective and your choices. In a positive aspect, this card indicates that a shocking or disruptive influence is coming to an end. You can now pick up the pieces and start fresh. In a negative aspect, you could continue to be in a state of shock about a recent experience you have had. You may feel like “life is unfair”, that you are a victim of circumstances. Your perspective is key here. How will you choose to see it?

Energies of the Week: 4 of Swords, 2 of Wands (Reversed), 9 of Swords
Themes of the Week: 4 of Wands, The Tower (Reversed)

1. Appreciate and savor what you have. Your home shelters you and supports you and your loved ones. Why not make the start of the new year a time to focus on the abundance you already have in your life, rather than things on your wish list? Read books from your own shelves, cook meals from your pantry, listen to music you haven’t played for a while, pull out your favorite old movies, snuggle under your favorite quilt. Appreciate the plenty all around you!

Weekly Tarot Reading from Divine Love Readings by Leah

Leah’s Weekly Tarot Reading December 29, 2014-January 4, 2015

Happy New Year! As 2014 comes to a close and we enter 2015, a brand new energy is ushered in.

For the beginning of the week, on Monday and Tuesday, there is a festive and celebratory spirit in the air. The Three of Cups represents celebration, fun times, and playfulness. It often indicates special occasions spent with loved ones, such as family gatherings, parties, and get togethers with friends. Enjoy these two days, take time to relax, and be light-hearted and free-spirited. This is “Eat, drink, and be merry” energy.

During the middle of the week, on Wednesday and Thursday, you can expect a shocking event or turn of events. The last day of 2014 and the first day of 2015 will come in with a bang. Perhaps you will experience something as innocent as a (literal) fireworks show. On the other hand, a swift and dramatic life-altering event may catch you by surprise. This could lead to a clean-sweep of something in your life that has needed to go (or change) for a while now. The time has come. Although it may appear that things are crumbling, rest assured that the breaking down of preexisting structures will make room for new, more positive structure to be built. This could be a job layoff, a spouse leaving you, a natural disaster striking your home, or something less impacting that still comes as a surprise. Try not to be overly concerned if you find yourself “drifting” for a short period time following whatever comes…new doors will be opening for you quickly.

On Friday and throughout the weekend, the message is “co-dependency no more!”. You are walking away from an addictive situation or from something that may have tempted or enslaved you in the past. You have reached a point where you are beginning to understand the need to be in control of your own life, rather than let someone else pull the strings. You are able to cut the ties that have bound you. A release from bondage. Breaking free. You are no longer being ruled by your obsessions, material things, or addictions.

The themes of this week are a brand new beginning in your emotional life and YOU being in charge of this new phase of your life. Here we have an emotional renewal blended with leadership, energy, and passion. This could be either you or a man in your life who is devoted and committed, yet adventurous and passionate. If you haven’t already, you may be meeting someone who fits this criteria, who is interested in starting up a love affair with you. If this is the case, prospects for the future are very promising, as this is a relationship that will be based in true love rather than need or want. If you are already involved, you can expect a new beginning in your emotional life, one that you will feel empowered and energized about.

Feng Shui holiday season decorating tips

Decorating your home with good feng shui colors is the key to an ideal Feng Shui holiday season. What you need to do in the colder season is bring into your environment the energy and the colors of the fire element. Examples such as many candles, good fireplace, bright holiday lights and bright gold and red holiday decorations.

Even though using Fire element colors, such as red, purple warm up the energy of your home in the cold season, keep in mind the balance that is needed also. If you have an too strong of a Fire element during the holiday season – which happens in many homes with an overwhelming amount of red color – you risk creating an energy that promotes burn-out and even emotional outbursts. The low energy people often feel after the  holidays is often created by an unbalanced fire element in their homes. Be mindful about balancing the strong Fire element of the holiday season with a cooler color scheme, such as soothing light blue, cool silver or gray and white. The Water and Metal element colors can create a fresh, calm, cool sense in your home that will balance the strong Fire element of the season.  Creating balance with colors and the elements will help you avoid the stress and the lack of energy many people feel during the holiday season and at the beginning of the New Year.
The tree belongs to the Wood feng shui element, so place it in an area that is either compatible with wood or benefits from the wood element
The placement of the holiday tree in one of these feng shui areas will bring harmonious energy because of the beneficial balance of the five elements.
East(Health & Family), Southeast(Money and Abundance), South<(Fame and Reputation)
If you have to place it in any other area, that will not necessarily create bad feng shui, but just keep in mind the colors you use for your  tree decorations.

If you have to have your  tree in another feng shui direction, here are the best colors for its decoration:Feng Shui holiday season decorating

  • North (Career) – Use Water and Metal element colors (blue, gray, black, white)
  • Northeast (Self-Cultivation) – Use Fire and Earth element colors (red, pink, yellow, earthy tones)
  • Southwest (Love) – Same as for the Northeast area
  • West (Creativity) – Use Earth and Metal element colors (gray, earthy tones, white)
  • Northwest (Networking) – Same as for the West area
  • Center (Heart) – Same as for the Northeast and Southwest areas.

“Over the river and through the woods
Trot fast my dapple gray.
Spring over the ground
Like a hunting hound
On this Thanksgiving Day, Hey!
Over the river and through the woods
Now Grandmother’s face I spy.
Hurrah for the fun,
Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie.”
English folksong, It’s Raining, It’s Pouring

T hanks for time to be together, turkey, talk, and tangy weather.
H for harvest stored away, home, and hearth, and holiday.
A for autumn’s frosty art, and abundance in the heart.
N for neighbors, and November, nice things, new things to remember.
K for kitchen, kettles’ croon, kith and kin expected soon.
S for sizzles, sights, and sounds, and something special that about.
That spells THANKS for joy in living and a jolly good Thanksgiving.
Aileen Fisher, All in a Word

“Over the river and through the wood
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes
And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.

Over the river and through the wood
To have a first-rate play.
Hear the bells ring,
Ting-a-ling-ling!
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!”
