Teens:Drew Lustman – Crystal Cowboydrew lustman

Best known for his work as FaltyDL, Drew Lustman explores hardcore and drum & bass, as well as soul and funk on his latest release. A step away from his electro moniker, Falty DL, Lustman found himself experimenting and making the kind of tracks he would DJ with or play to friends “without the pressure of the conceptual weighing him down”. Tracks like ‘Angel Flesh’ are reminiscent of early hardcore and breakbeat, while ‘Watch A Man Die’ is a smooth, drum and bass journey. This is a must have for lovers of the pioneering breakbeat scene of the 1990s and will be a familiar soundscape to anyone fortunate enough to have raved at some of London’s best drum and bass nights during that era. Whether he’s in electro or drum and bass mode, Lustman is a musical warrior to be reckoned with.

Adults:DJ Dolores - Banda SonoraNovember Review 2014

DJ Dolores has been at the forefront of Brazilian electronic music for almost two decades. Having been a DJ in the 90s, Helder Aragão made the shift to producing his own music towards the end of the century. He first made a name for himself when he was invited by filmmaker Kleber Medonça to produce the score for his 1997 film ‘Enjuaulado’. Always fascinated by the overlaying nature of the visual and the sonic, DJ Dolores’ ‘Banda Sonora Música para Filmes’ (Soundtrack Music for Movies) is a collection of songs galvanized by various visual sources, from documentaries to fantastic flicks. Each song has its own reflective significance for Dolores, but untied, they act as a journal of his memories connected to his time creating compositions for Brazilian cinema. The album strikes an expert blend of north-eastern roots and contemporary electronica. With traditional violin’s, flutes and accordions perched atop stomping traditional rhythms and huge dub bass.

Throughout the book the verse is simple yet expressive, but it is the illustrations by Johnson and Fancher that evoke powerful dreamscapes – a spread of two mermaids slumbering on a bed of coral, pirates sleeping against the gunwales of their ship, a mother and baby unicorn dozing in a forest, and faeries curled up and sleeping under the moonlight. Friends, a children’s books for environmental awareness

When I was a child I used to spend a lot of time in the garden playing with everything around me. There were many fruit trees and I had so much fun climbing them, dancing and singing under them, eating fruits, making up fruit parties and discovering new places. I remember that when it rained I made boats of paper and put them to run down the “rivers” I saw there.

I am an adult now, and even if I forgot those games for a short while, I still spend a lot of time outdoors and near nature every chance I have. When we spend time observing nature, we feel close and part of everything that happens around: a bird flying, how animals of different species interact, why things are important the way they are.

Playing with dogs and cats is a big extra for someone who loves nature, something I have done, not as a child, but since an adult, and since they chose me to be their friend and companion, and started teaching me. It was one of my jobs for a long time, and it is part of my life.

Friends is a short book about true friendship. It tells us about what true friends are for each other and some of the things they do together; that true friendship happens between humans and animals, and shows evidence that companionship and sharing are present in the animal world too.

With illustrations inspired by our relationships with our pets, and the relationships between animals of the same or of different species.

By Juliana Soares a 28 year old Brazilian, with a degree in Social Communications, taken at the University of Madeira, on idyllic Madeira Island, Portugal. A self-taught artist and independent writer on subjects such as love, nature, human and animal well-being and sustainability; a student of spiritual teacher, Lady Dyanna. Juliana sings and writes songs about love and nature, and studies some of Ted Andrews’ teachings. Some of her greatest passions and sources of inspiration are everything in nature, children, and all the animals that are always around her.

Back to Nature: environmental awareness books for children

This work was created to tell children of ways to appreciate simple things and have a simple life connected to nature, and why the relationships we see in the natural world are important for the balance in our lives and in the planet. What’s more, that our lives are part of these relationships.

When we are in a green space or a wood, when we observe how the natural world works, we go back to feel we are part of it, and that we obey  the same laws that work so evidently in nature. Being close to nature allows us to be who we truly are.

As children have an intuitive knowledge of the natural world, the content of the books aims to help them  maintain and strengthen that awareness and love.

The first book, Small Cats and Big Cats shows that the natural habitats of wild animals are their homes, and worth preserving. Because we see around the world examples of men taking away the homes of animals, it is important to remember that it is not ok to do that, as we are made believe it is. And knowing that helps us, as children and adults, not to engage in direct or indirect activities that promote or justify those actions. The preservation of their homes is actually closely related to our own well-being as humans. It also pictures the family ties and nobility of small and big felines, looking at the sincere companionship small cats gift us with, and the lessons all cats, big and small, teach for our lives.

The projects of the books that are to follow present other relationships in nature and a new but old way of seeing and living: presenting a harmonious human interaction with nature. In this, the relationships of which we are part, and can observe working in the natural world – such as  how the seeds grow, how animals interact with their environment and with each other, and how the cycles go – teach us, along with the intuitive knowledge that is born with us, and can always grow.

Nature is the teacher itself; we are here to walk along with it.
