The chakras are energy centers that run through the physical body and assist in the health and balance of your physical life and well-being. Like a machine your body uses this energy to bring vitality and health throughout all aspects of your life by aligning the body, mind and soul connection and grounds it to the energy of the Earth.

The root chakra is the first of the chakras which begins at the base of your spine and emanates with a bright red glow downward. It is the point at which your physical body is connected directly into the Earth and handles the primal necessities of your life such as food, shelter, security.

When the root chakra is grounded properly your basic needs are met and you will find balance flowing outward towards all area’s of your life. All problems and conflicts that you encounter will be met with calmness and clarity and you will find that you will be able to handle them with confidence and ease.

A root chakra that is not flowing properly can present itself as physical symptoms which include constipation, lower back pain, greed, financial problems, sleep disorders, fatigue, low energy, low self esteem and even violence.

Hollyhock or Alcea rosea can be annual, biennial or perennial and comes in a variety of colors.  It is a member of the hibiscus family. Hollyhocks grow between 4 and 8 feet tall and like well-drained, rich soil and good sunshine.  The flowers blossom in July and August but the flowers don’t stay open for long, usually for less than a week.  They do however produce a lot of seeds which grow easily so whilst they may not bloom for long each hollyhock can produce lots of other hollyhocks, ensuring a continual supply!  They look lovely in cottage gardens and also make a good border plant as they provide both height and color.

Lammas marks the beginning of the harvest period and it is the fertility of hollyhocks that therefore associates them with this sabbat.  Stalks of hollyhocks were often carried at the festival of Lammas.  The hollyhock is associated with Venus, the Roman goddess Ceres and the Greek goddess Demeter, representing agriculture and fertility.

Hollyhocks can be used in magick in spells to increase wealth and prosperity and attract success of all sorts. You could put some seed pods in a talisman and carry it with you to attract money and abundance and whatever resources you need.  Hollyhocks growing in the garden, particularly near to the house itself, can help assist bring prosperity and success and a happy family life to those who live there.

The flowers, leaves and roots of the hollyhock are all edible.  The flowers can be dried and used to make a potpourri to keep in the home.  The flowers can also be used to produce dyes of different colors.  Medicinally, hollyhocks can be helpful for a range of ailments.  These include chest complaints, constipation and disorders of the blood such as menstrual problems, hemorrhaging or they can help with a difficult labor.  The root of the hollyhock can be crushed and made into a poultice applied externally to the body for ulcers.  A tea can be made from hollyhock flowers and drunk to help with sore throats and bladder problems.
